8 Tips to stay Safe on the Internet

Surviving information on the Internet aside, what matters more is digital security. There are so many pretty guidelines in this article you have to read it in between lines to get the best out of it
. Here's my simplistic take on it for 95% of online users:-

  • Use 2-Factor Authentication for all your online accounts. I'd recommend using Authy instead of Google Authenticator as it also backs up your secret keys.

  • Use different passwords for everything.

  • Use password managers like 1Password, Keepass, etc. You just need to keep one single master password safe, so make it long and complex. Make sure you can export all data.

  • Choose a telco that exercises good security protocols, especially when it comes to sim-card replacement. Although more expensive, my service provider requires in-person, fingerprint ID before sim-cards can be replaced. This mitigates risk of identity impersonation. Someone getting hold of your phone identity is not good news, obviously.

  • Have two phone numbers. One public, one private. The private number shouldn't be made public at all so use this for the important accounts.

  • Put keylock on your phone. Make sure you wipe the touchscreen every now and then.

  • Think four times before clicking on a link. Think ten times before sending any money or password to anyone or form on the Internet!
  • The best digital security is to get things offline. Etch your private keys on some anti-rust plate. Plant them underground. Use this for crypto-wallets that you want to be able to access after a few hundred years, if life-extension becomes a thing.
